EtherCAT (Ethernet Control Automation Technology) is an open architecture, an Ethernet-based field bus system, and its name CAT is the abbreviation of the prefix of Control Automation Technology. EtherCAT is a deterministic industrial Ethernet, which was originally developed by the German company Beckhoff. Automation usually requires shorter update times (or cycle times) for communication, low communication jitter when synchronizing data, and low hardware costs. The purpose of EtherCAT's development is to allow Ethernet to be used in automation applications.
